Hi, I just started my first garden. Can someone please help me? This started growing and I have no clue what it is. Thank you!!!
Some Morning glory probably one of the invasive tropical types. http://keyserver.lucidcentral.org/w...04-0605030c0f01/media/Html/Ipomoea_indica.htm
Thank you Saltcedar! It does look like it....So strange......I couldn't find it anywhere else in my yard....... I guess I would have to remove it :( I was hoping it was a vegetable............
Thanks! I am so confused now!?........ I made a raised bed and planted vegetables from seeds. I didn't buy any sweet potatoes seeds. That is actually the section where I planted onions and I have lettuce on the left. I would love sweet potatoes!.....not sure what to do, if it is a weed, it will kill my veggies!?....... This is the first time I plant, made the raised bed in February....
Sweet Potato is planted from slips. IE cuttings that are true to variety. So far as I know they don't form viable seeds in the US. If you didn't bury any sweet potato tubers or vines you don't have them in your garden. The invasive species listed above could very well smother your vegetables.
saltcedar is right, but whether or not sweet potato is a possibility could depend on the previous history of the patch of soil. Its roots can hang around for years in the soil. Probably safest to dig it up, jiraffe1974. If you love sweet potato, it's so easy to grow from a bought tuber.
Thank you both so much. I am going to dig it up and transplant it by the fence, might be great for privacy and it looks very nice! I have the feeling that this won't be my last time encountering weird plants next to my veggies......a learning process :)
I found a time-lapse video on YouTube of "morning glory tendrils showing thigmotropism": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2xKjA69jNM If your plant is a morning glory, you'll be seeing this behaviour very soon. We have white morning glories all over the city (Vancouver, Canada). They are beautiful and fascinating, and you can't help but like them for what they are. However, in terms of their being invasive, aggressive, and extremely persistent—they are extremes. Apparently they don't "strangle" other plants. They seem to, but their very close proximity to other plants simply shades the others out. Wikipedia offers a good introduction at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morning_glory
Very nice! Thank you........I can't wait to see it grow by my fence, I hope it survives the transplant.
