We just recently bought and moved into our house, and we have a huge Butternut tree. It has been producing a lot of fruit, and I was wondering if anyone knows how to pick the nuts(when?), and how to cook with them. Can you use them like other nuts in recipes such as banana bread?

    Thanks! Julie

Pick them up as they fall. The first few to come down are likely to be 'empties' or insect-infested; check them and get rid of any that are insect infested (so fewer insects hatch out to damage next years crop).

If you have squirrels in the area, beating them to the crop won't be easy. First light after a windy night is the best time to gather.

If you want to get rid of some butternut seeds I will take them...as I grow Butternut to replant.

Thank you, Michael. I now will try to be quicker than the squirrels! So, after I have collected some good nuts, what do I do next? Do I dry them out? And if so, then how? Also, am wondering about cooking with the nuts? Anyone know any info about how to cook with them?
