The fungi on the log are remarkable.

Looks like it is north of Georgian Bay on Lake Huron and Brantford is just west of Lake Ontario? Must have been a pretty drive.

The drive is rather boring until one gets on the TransCanada Highway 17 North of the Great Lakes. Most of Ontario is not inhabitated, and most people live in Southern Ontario. To find wilderness one must go North of Highway 17. People in Southern Ontario have very limited access to the Great Lakes shoreline due to most shoreline being private. At best a few Parks. Georgian Bay has almost no access. In fact, one person I knew grew up in Toronto, and said he didn't know Toronto was on a lake, since there is so little access.

To enjoy nature at its best one must go North of the Great Lakes. There are thousands of clear inland lakes, often with trails left by the logging of the territory. There are many trails that are accessible with all terrain vehicles, but I went to sites I could reach by car them hiked along various trails. I look for mushrooms and take pictures. It was too dry to see many mushrooms. I plan on going back in September when it is a little more wet.

The stars can be seen clearly at night, which is not possible in general in Southern Ontario, due to probably pollution and city lights. Also it is dead quiet at night, no traffic. This is not the piece of cake for all, but I find it rejuvinates me for another year after several trips.

I remember a few trips to the North Shore of Lake Superior as a youth. It was glorious. I took a short winter trip, too, back in college and thought the wind-sculpted winter drifts amazing. It's sad that access to the lake is so limited.

I envy you your September trip.
