I was so excited to be told about this great "new" location for 'Akebono' - a whole block of trees the median and south side of Kincaid at MadDonald, in front of Burnaby General Hospital. But it turns out I posted them for the first time in 2017, then forgot all about them. So I got to be thrilled all over again.
I spotted this tree in the morning at the corner of Frances street and MacDonald avenue. I checked our maker for this location, it labelled as Pandora(ID. 4133), the post date is April 29, 2017. From the post, it was guessing it is Pandora because flowers almost finished at that time. The flowers from this tree do not look flat, the tip of petal is not more pink then rest of petal. I picked up a couple of falling flowers and measured the size of it, I tried to flat it out and measured again. Tao, I am going to guess 'Afterglow'. The tree habit looks similar to another 'Afterglow' posted in Burnaby. One of your photos has narrow petals like 'Pandora', but another one does not, and the pink colouring is more like 'Afterglow' when its flowers have faded somewhat. I've changed the map to link to your posting, changed the name to 'Afterglow'.
A Beni-shidare tree on 6160 Sumas street is in full bloom. The location of this tree on our database is listed as 6551 Sumas Dr, should be 6160 Sumas street.
Burnaby's two 'Shosar' trees are still hanging in there on the south side of Sherban Crescent, east of Holdom. Past peak bloom at March 29, 2026. This is what "cerise" pink flowers look like. Other features: prominent veining pattern on the petals; bright red sepals and calyces.
Those 'Akebono' at David Gray Park seem to run forever down the street. And the 'Yae-beni-shidare' with the long draping branches is nice to see.
