Hello All, Apologies as this question is a little different from the norm. I have recently moved to the Vancouver area to run a small distillery that has been installed as part of a brewers expansion plans. My question relates to Botanicals in distillation and local botanical suppliers. Aside from Golden Bough does anyone know of other good botanical suppliers, particularly of Juniper berries? Secondly does anyone know of any pleasantly fragrant botanicals that are associated and are indigenous to this area? Many thanks for your time
It's not that different, as it is the second one I've seen along these lines in the past year. I think it's great that a new distillery is being launched. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to answer the other query, either. I suggested to the person to email the Native Plant Society of BC mailing list http://lists.vvv.com/mailman/listinfo/npsbc as there is likely a larger cross-section of people ingesting native plants (mostly for food, I'd imagine, but also some as flavourings). The Washington NPS and Oregon NPS also have active listservs.
Be careful over juniper cones ('berries') - some species are toxic, but there's very little information available as to which (Juniperus sabina from central Europe is one that is known to be toxic). The species usually used for flavouring is Common Juniper Juniperus communis.
