I have a Blue Spruse that is 4 years and is 6ft high. Last year the main stem grew 1-ft with no branches. This year branches started growing from last years 1-ft growth, with the longest branches at the top. The main stem grew another 1-ft this spring again with no branches. The tree looks strange with the main stems last years 1-ft growth with the longest branches being 3-4 inches, and this years 1-ft growth and no branches. The bottom 4-ft of the tree looks normal wirh the lower branches being 1.5-2ft long. I have been told not to trim the top of the tree. Should I let the tree continue its growth pattern or should the tree be pruned?
Thanking you in advanced for your advise.

Sounds normal to me. Can you post a photo?

Yes, a picture would be very helpful. Never cut the leader (main, highest stem) off a conifer, unless you're planning to bonsai it, in which case you could do that, and then train the next lowest branch to grow upward (by gentle splinting) instead, to take over from the original one.
