I just purchased a Coubert Rose and have planted it in a pot. Can you tell me if it will thrive or does it need to be in the garden.
Will grow in a big enough pot. Main problem will be if it fills the pot and is not put in a bigger one.
Thanks for the reply. Was planning on repotting every couple years. Just hoping it won't be susceptible to frost in winter when in a pot.
Very hardy but if grafted on a more tender rootstock that might result in increased vulnerability, I suppose. There could also be a problem with delayed incompatibility, I have had grafted Rugosa roses dwindle. Plant is liable to need a tub rather soon, this will be a more frost-resistant situation than a smaller pot. Possible issues with it being grafted could be gotten around by taking cuttings and starting replacement plants from those, discarding original grafted specimen when these have been gotten. Confined to a container it will not spread to form a thicket, as it would if on its own roots and in the soil. I have noticed sprouts across the street recently which really appear to have come from my own root 'Alba'. They do not look like seedlings, and I have not been getting regular, definite occurrences of seedlings on my side. If flowering is permitted that will serve as an additional indication. I might offer to pull them up, too, at which time it will become obvious if they are from beneath the pavement.
Wow, sounds like I made a good choice of plant. Thanks so much for your info. Perhaps I'll look for a more permanent home for it after the summer.
