I saw these growing at a base of a stump. Any ideas what they might be? (please see attached photos) Also I wanted to share this amazing compilation of timelapse photography by Stephen Axford. Appears to be Xylaria polymorpha or similar (I don't know the specific species options in your region), and it appears to be currently in sexy phase ... .
(in the first photo center right side) Are those white spores on top of the two standing to the right of the colony? Or is that an early sign of decay?
Yup, could be asexual spores. Something about the way it looks makes me wonder if it could be a case of surface being scraped off for some reason and the white being a bit of the interior? Not sure what colour the interior of this critter is tho, so not sure if that is possible or not.
