i recently purchased a black cardinal philodendron. it is gorgeous but some of the lower leaves are looking kind of shabby. i am fairly new to houseplants and have learned that with various other plants, pruning promotes growth. i also recognize that black cardinals, and other philos, are slow-growers. i guess what i'm trying to say is that i cut off one of the leaves at the bottom and it looked like it was bleeding where i cut it and i felt bad. i might be crazy, but i'm also curious. i haven't been able to find an answer online, despite hours of searching. thanks in advance for your help!
I love the smell of the fragrant sap that most Philos give when cutting . With winter coming for you I would leave as many leaves on as possible , just position the plant so the more damaged ones are not as obvious . Feed and spoil until a few new leaves have come . I found these dark ones to be very slow growers .
