I have only been gardening for a couple years and planted 2 blueberry bushes last year. They did pretty well and I would like to expand. I live in zone 5A and we have anywhere from swampy to fairly dry soil. I'm interested in raspberries, cranberries, and dwarf berry or fruit trees. All help is appreciated. Thanks
I live in Zone 5a Ottawa Ontario. I do have Rasberry plants outside in 5 gallon pots (10 pots) surviving and fruiting well. These are Boyrne and Killarny type. See below for more help for zNew York area: http://www.fruit.cornell.edu/Berries/bramblepdf/raspplanttype.pdf I have a pie-cherry Northstar and a sweet-sour Evan cherry doing good and fruiting well. I have planted only in the summer of 2006 some sweet cherries, plum, peaches and apricot. The trees have survived one winter, some bloom and a few fruits that I could not get to them before the squirrels did. I hope that as they mature they will fruit more (overcoming the Zone 5 difficulties, I hope). I am just a backyard hobbyist and so trying things even if not recommended by local nurseries hoping micro-climate conditions may help.
Cranberries are probably not for the home garden. Their requirements are rather stringent. http://xrl.us/r93c I also have a bing cherry tree, and a pear tree. My Zone is 5B. Here is my selection over the last four years. In 2008: the European Gooseberry will be added, a Pawpaw bush, and some thornless blackberries. http://aicah.notlong.com/ http://rhubarb2.notlong.com/ http://fmulberry.notlong.com/ http://sheph.notlong.com/ http://ohqui.notlong.com http://toogu.notlong.com/ http://ibozo.notlong.com/
