I was able to pick up Beni Otake and Beni Schichihenge today at the nursery. Both were in seven gallons. I am now kicking myself for not picking up all three. I remember some advise I have read in the forum before about not just picking a plant because of its name. The Oridono Nishiki had a lot of broken branches. I am curious to what other Japanese Maple collectors would have picked? If you had to list your top five maples what would they be? In order: 5. Orange Dream 4. Viridis 3. Koto No ito 2. Shishigashira 1. Otome Zakura All of my plants are fairly young so I am judging them by what my plants have done for me so far.
not in order but I like: floating clouds orido nishiki shishigashira shindeshojo (probably the #1 fave for me, I love the pink growth) after those four I would have to go for a few snakebarks (capilipes and pennsylvanicum) and a paperbark (griseum)...
Too many... to choose from. As the season progresses maybe I can decide. Overall though, I think I prefer the japonicum cultivars best. A small Acer japonicum 'Meigetsu'...today
Speaking of the shindeshojo, does anyone know how it will do on a patio without any direct sun? I'm afraid it will turn soild green and that's not what I'm looking for...
5 of my favorites: buergerianum Nusatoriyama palmatum Kinran palmatum Kocho nishiki palmatum Kiyohime akame palmatum Sherwood Flame Always pick out the best plant. Never second guess yourself about a Maple you may want to have in time but did not like the look of the plant for sale. There will be other Oridono nishikis available, just wait for a better plant to come along. Brad, I've always liked Meigetsu and have often wondered why others do not try to select it as one of their first japonicums to own. Shindeshojo grown with ample filtered sunlight will still produce new growth with color but you may not see a lot of new growth after the Spring. A lot depends on how much filtered sunlight this Maple will get but grown in high shade you may only see the red color in the Spring. The typical red color for this Maple will not be as intense as if grown in sun and then the leaves will be more of a bronze green in color later as the red color fades out. This Maple does make a real good container plant. Jim Just for fun below is a partial listing of my current want list: Aizumi nishiki Beni kosode Fujinami nishiki Hana matoi Hiro taishaku Izu no odoriko Kaga o beni Maimori Naniwa beni Ogi tsuma gaki Orizuru momo fu Osakazuki akame O taishaku C Pink Filigree Ryushoin
I have been looking all over for a Shin Deshojo tree. I can't find one in a descent size for a descent price. I have about two hundred dollars set aside for the tree. Does anyone know where I can find a Shin Deshojo for that price. I live in south eastern Pa.
I bought mine mail order from the west coast as a 3 year size, and three years later it is 6' tall. They grow pretty fast. It really is one of my favorites, too. At this point I'm really starting to shape it more.
Well you can try Creative Water Gardens in Escalon, CA. Give them a call and see if they deliver. They have great trees! (209) 838-8650 If they don't I'm sure they could point you to a place that will. That's about as much help as I can offer up from the Left Coast.
