Hi I live in Vancouver. I inherited a "lawn" 1 1/2 years ago that was fast being completely taken over by something a friend called "varigated something or other". I rented the house while I was out of town for a year, the tenants "forgot" to mow the yard and when I returned they began to clean it up to the point that all I see now is brown earth with narry ? a green leaf. (maybe they did me a favour)

I would like a lawn, but as environmentally friendly a lawn as possible.
My question(s): Do I need to use a herbicide? If so can someone advise on a green friendly one.
What kind of sod should I put down or can I try seed? I would appreciate any advice at all. NOTHING is too basic.. trust me.

The yard is north facing with both sun and shade. Yard does not get heavy traffic although we might get a dog.

first off, you arent allowed to use any pesticides in Vancouver except a few exempted ones.
Consider dutch white clover (available as seed) as an alternative or consult your local garden center for ground covers that will take some traffic and the sun/water conditions you can provide, there are lots of alternatives.

Thank you so much for you advice. One big fear was that the varigated plant would come up again. I will try to post a photo if it would help.
