I live in Alberta and I am looking for some cutting of rhizomes of bamboo. I really want to start growing some plants in the yard for the summer and some plants for indoors for winter. If you know of any place to get some rhizomes or some one who would ship me some I would be greatful. Thanks
Bamboo is beautiful, but invasive. Not far from here in zone 6 my relatives have been struggling with their neighbors' bamboo. The shoots are coming out 5 meters from the fence! No amount of mowing and ripping can get rid of it. The neighbors' trees got embedded in the bamboo forest and died. There is no controlling this thing. I prefer to admire it from a safe distance.
I don't think that there are any bamboos that will survive an Alberta winter, much less become invasive.
I don't think that there are any bamboos that will survive a typically poorly lit and centrally heated (very dry air) home over Winter.
Yes, if you are going to start collecting them you will probably need to put up a suitable greenhouse - if you don't have one already.
We have a built in sun room that is on the south of the house. It is heated in the winter. I have done a lot of looking into it already. I grow all my plants in there before they go in the garden or to different parts of the house.
So, can you not just introduce your neighbor to the OP and let them work out some sort of arrangement?
