Well the deer seemed to have moved on (fingers crossed) but the rabbit population has exploded in the passed 2 years. They're every bit as damaging in the garden but more of them. Here's Phyllostachys nigra 'Bory' after one evenings attack. Cheers, LPN,
aww...:( We had trouble with rabbits in our yard for the past few years but we have a small backyard and we were able to figrue out how they got in and then blocked it offf....haven't had a problem since....well the squirrels are kindof annoying at times but not as damaging as the rabbits so we'll let them be....
I agree, Michael. Needs a great chef to make rabbit meat taste good. A simple solution is to put 2 feet long 3 inch PVC pipes over the shoots when they emerge. Make sure that they are supported securely so that the varmints won't knock them over. Remove them by slipping them over the top when the canes mature and become unpalatable to the rabbits. And before the branches break out (or else, you will be stuck with a bunch of PVC pipes around your bamboo culms!).
I have cages around some of the bamboo but not enough to go around since some specimen are becoming sizeable.
