Appreciation: Auricularia

    I came across these yesterday, the latest in the year I've ever seen them, by about a month.
    Here in the southern Rockies, they grow only on fallen spruce at a certain point of decay (i.e. not just down and not too far along), very close to running water, at altitudes 9000 to 11000 ft asl. (~2700-3300m)

    Nice! I used to find them in mid September at some elevation (1500ft?) . I recall they were on fairly intact and large true-fir logs, presumably Amabilis. Definitely not a mushroom I see often.
