Has anyone grown this plant? I picked up a little one in a 4 inch pot at the nursery yesterday - the only information on it was that it likes poor dry soils, full or part sun, and grows to 36 in tall. This all seems to fit with what I need, but when I got it home and looked in my Sunset Western Garden book, it said it grows 6 feet wide - that's huge! I have a really tiny garden, and was looking for something fluffy and silver, mid-height, but not that wide!

If you have grown this plant, or know of it, does it really get that big? How long does it take before it gets that big, and can it be controlled with pinching or pruning to stay a little less wide?

More like 36in wide. Expect to be cutting it back in spring as it may open up or become a bit bedraggled.
