The following was received via email:

My two year old armandii clematis, seems sick. the leaves closest to the trunk of the plant are turning browny black and brittle, the rest of the plant, the new growth from last year still looks green. The plant has not been pruned or disturbed and sits in a half barrel facing north east.Is this normal or is it dieing?
    Thanks Jay

Hi Jay, this is not a full answer to your question, but I wanted to direct you to this previous thread. Perhaps your leaves are similar.
