Hi, I lost a ten year old japanese maple to verticillium wilt a couple of years ago. I had grown it from a seedling and was quite upset to lose it. I tried using systemic fungicide's even though I really don't like chemicals. It seemed to slow the spread but eventually the entire tree succumbed. Now a bloodgood japanese maple situated about fifteen feet away from the one I took out two years ago is showing signs of wilt. It is very discouraging. I have about twenty japanese maple seedlings growing in pots and most are about three years old. I am wondering if I should continue to care for them or are they bound for the same fate. I also have a pretty filigree maple in a bed about twenty feet away and wonder if it is at risk. I have been looking at planting an acer japonicum seedling I like. Is it possible this maple is more resistant than others? I also have a vine maple seedling and another seedling from a tree near the ball park that I haven't identified yet. Thanks, Westcoastgarden
Pretty much. It displayed all the typical symptoms. When I had the tree removed they pointed out on the stump how much of the sap was blocked - about 75% at that point. It is apparently common here - and I live in Maple Ridge - isn't that ironic? Thanks for the suggestion re: googling. However, I have already done a fair bit of that with little concrete information resulting. Actually, it just made me nervous about a bunch of trees I didn't even know were susceptible. Not sure what I can really take pictures of. There are branches that have lost their leaves. It become noticeable in about June of this year. Now an entire branch is defoliated and parts of another are showing signs. This tree is only half the size of the one I lost previously.
Whatever you can get (as per a photo) would be excellent. With fall coming on, well I guess it may not work real well.
