Is is possible to grow Arctostaphylos uva-ursi 'Vancouver Jade' in a deck rail planter box (approx. 10" wide x 10" deep)? It would be in full sun. Location: Gabriola Island (Zone 7?). It's the perfect plant I've been looking for: evergreen, low growing, that would 'cascade' over the edge of the planter. If not, what size container would it need. Would it need to be pruned? Any help would be much appreciated.
If the mix is gritty and fast draining, and you can provide a relatively cool place in winter for it, it should be o.k. And pruning in early spring will help it to become fuller and neater, though if you want it to cascade, it seems counterproductive, though even then the interior should be cleaned up (opened up) a bit every year to allow some light inside and get rid of last year's dead leaves.
