Does anyone recall seeing Arbutus like shrubs clinging along the rocky bluffs, across from Sproat Lake near Port Alberni ? Having never stopped to investigate, I recall similar Arbutus like shrubs on Mt.Shasta, California...my question is, are these naturalized shrubs? And please identify them.

I have heard of people thinking that Salal is baby Arbutus. Shiny leaves maybe.

I've been through this area and can confirm these are Arctostaphylos columbiana (Manzanita). There are indeed native plants that range from the southern tip of Vancouver Island, through that area around Port Alberni in low elevation rocky areas.
