Does anyone have any experience with freesias?

I planted some this year, and was hoping they would naturalize, but after carefully reading the package it says you should discard the bulbs after flowering. Is that the reason that they are not more commonly grown?

At Finnies garden at Riverview Hospital, we have a large naturalized patch of them, naturally dividing every year. All we do to them, is cover with leaf mulch, through the Winter. They are not very common to see in gardens anymore. The package yours came in may be referring to a much colder climate than ours.

Around here they pop up all over the place. Nature strips, lawns, paddock. They are only the old cream one but still look beautiful. We are cool winters warm to hot summer.

Thanks for your responses. I read that they are hardy to Zone 7b, so I will take your advice, Niall, and mulch well, cross my fingers and dream of large clumps of fragrant freesia.

[Liz -- you're about 10 degrees warmer than we are all year round. (Isn't Wikipedia great?)]
