Hello, first post....so be nice!!! lol ! My mum has had a Kiwi plant in her garden for the past 4 or so years.....probably longer. It is outdoors as in not in a greenhouse and not in a bright sunny place. She has had many Kiwi fruit from it, mostly small ones that are a nice flavour. Now then, please can you help me identify this variety? And how do we prune it and when? It's the only Kiwi plant there, so I assume its a self pollinator. The fruit are fuzzy and small. As it is outside, it does have the odd frost, but it is sheltered by overhanging trees. It lives in the south west of England, Cornwall in fact. Any clues? What questions can I answer to help you help me?? Thanks in advance.
Thank you for the reply. Can I ask what is the best way and when should it be pruned? I don't think it has been pruned efficiently at all as mum can't reach it properly to do so. So before I 'hack' at it, can I have some advise please? Thanks in advance again.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/plants/plant_finder/plant_pages/11752.shtml The above has a photo of one called 'Jenny', but the fruit look too round to be mums. But it is a self pollinator whereas 'Hayward' needs a male but looks more like mums......i'm easily confused.....! Any clues....?
Here is a site showing pictures of many different types of kiwi with photos. Maybe you can identify yours by these pictures. The "Jenny" photo is this link below are more oblong than the ones in your picture. The colour of the flesh inside might give us a hint also. http://kiwifruit.tuinkrant.org/ It's also possible that someone grafted a male vine onto a female so that the plant has both male and female parts for pollination. You could tell in the spring when it flowers if it produces both male and female flowers.
