Love Acer shirasawanum 'Aureum' I saw this maple in a large, mature form in a garden in Scotland on a garden tour this past August (2004)and fell immediately in love. Now I need to know if I can grow it here in the hot US South. I have a lovely picture of it. Can I post it here? (I'm new at this!)
I love this maple I bought one a few years ago to have it dessimated somewhat by a large cow or bullock which broke into my garden However, it seems to be recovering It still has a long way to go to be as large as the one you show though
Nice Specimen There is a spectacular tree labelled Golden Full Moon Maple at the Milner Gardens in Qualicum Beach on the Island. Well worth a look. If memory serves, it is slightly north of the main house, toward the cliff edge.
Don't know if it's an aureum or an other cv but here is a nice one. Picture taken today in a park in the center of Paris. I took some seeds and will try to sow it. I'll let you know !
Here's a pic of my favorite Japanese Maple, Golden Full moon grown here in Los Angeles, California. It sits up in my patio and gets morning sun til 12PM. This pic was taken April of 2005. I had to place it in the shade during summer to protect it from the scorching heat and Santa Ana winds. I also use filtered PUR water since water here in LA is very hard.
Since it becomes accepted to post pictures taken at other places, I would like to share with you some magnificient specimens I shot this summer (June) in the UK. I also post my own which, after 10 years, is barely 1.5 m tall!, a dwarf next to the others! Gomero
We have an Aureum in fairly deep shade (and very dry soil) under some old pines. Its fall color is hard to beat! This was taken in November.
Last November I bought a tiny AS 'Aureum', and the little creature began to sprout in december (due our unusual temperature for winter) so I had to take special cautions to avoid damage in the leaves. Now it's developing more leaves. Pretty beatifull and it is one of my favorites (among the Aconitifolium, Autumn Moon, Tsuma Gaki, First Gost, suminagashi, Seyru, Sangu Kaku, Shaina, Butterfly, burgundi lace, Oshio Beni, Waterfall, Garnet....) Here there are some pictures taken recently.
It's so nice in the spring: summers here are too hot for autumn colours to be spectacular I'm afraid, all the more when the tree is potted, but here's a picture I took today:
Wow, pretty nice!! AlainK. I got a second A.S. 'aureum" (2 gal pot) and another 'autumn moon' (3 gal). Both arrived yesterday (from a long -six day- trip) and as soon as I got them I replanted in wooden containers. The leaves from the aureum were a little bit impacted by the trip so I hope soon it will open full leaves (as yours shown); but anyway the color is simply amazing! The shirasawanums and japonicums are my favorites. Here pics taken yesterday, after reppoting. Nelran
Just got in a four foot A.s. 'Aureum', and it really is impressive. The fullness of the leaves, combined with the color and folded texture are really amazing. Its completely different than any of my other maples. Stunning! Very little shipping damage, even though it was shipped in mid-June (thanks to Greers for their amazing packaging job!) Enjoy pics. K4
I left mine in a too sunny spot this year (sun from 11 AM till sunset), and some of its leaves got sunburnt. Yet, the colours are beautiful in contrast with the A. monspessulanum which is in the ground and whose leaves are still a rather dark green.
Pictures of A. shirasawanum 'aureum' flowering in the afternoon sunlight, April 2011: I love the contrast of the leaf and flower colours.
I have had some trouble this year with loosing leaves off of my Aureums. The trees which are full protected have not had any problems and have great color. the ones in the more exposed locations do have a much brighter yellow leaf at this time.
