My acer shirasawanum 'Aureum' (in pot) started leafing out for about 2 weeks now. Everything seems to be ok so far. However, I notice a few new leaves starting to have black tips before it open up (as if it developed the black tips or leave burns inside the bud - see attachment). What can be the cause this? Is there anything I can do to fix this? This is the first year I have this tree. Seems like it can take another month or two before all the leaves open up on this small tree which is very amazing comparing with my shindeshojo (all the leaves open in 10 days).
Gomero, Mye is referring to the leaves and not the wood (differerent than 'Sangu kaku' thread). I have a 'Mimaye' that is showing these symptoms on a few branches. It's a condition where some of the leaf edges and tips are a pasty black matter. The wood that the buds broke from looks sound. Any ideas? Gil
Gil, I just took a walk around the garden and noticed black leaf tips on many maples. A. palmatum ssp palmatum particularly flagrant. No doubt about the cause in my case: frost burn. :( Some of the very early ones like mandshuricum and pennsylvanicum have massive leaf dieback and look pretty rough. Others like pictum some clusters look fine, others are crispy and black. -E
Thanks for that info Emery. It makes sense in my case as well because the 'Mimaye' came from the west coast more leafed out than plants (JMs) here on east coast. It's colder here and there were several <30F nights after it arrived. The other plants are more in sync with the climate here it seems. If 'Mimaye' is my only issue this season I'll be pleased. Appreciate. Gil
Frost damage ==> fertile ground for Pseudomonas ==> you may probably have both frost damage and pseudomonas Gomero
It is very likely frost damage in my case as well. All the branches are ok (there are only 2). I have been trying to bring the tree indoor for some of the colder nights earlier last week however, it was still relatively cold and windy outside. Will the damaged leaves still be able to function like a regular leaf for the rest of the season? Or, should I cut them off?
