These trees outside the law courts on Hornby (and Howe) Streets are mentioned by Straley in Trees of Vancouver (UBC Press, 1992) as being Acer rubrum 'Red Sunset'. I tried to tone down the cellphone camera colour. They're a bit paler orange than this.
Identification perhaps suspect, if I remember correctly mine always turned in September here (when they began to dominate the back yard I took them out). Note also cultivar name of that introduction is 'Franksred' and not 'Red Sunset'. http://www.jfschmidt.com/introductions/redsunset/index.html
