Acer Palmatum Osakazuki

Discussion in 'Maples' started by Unregistered, Sep 10, 2004.

  1. We have a specimen on a single trunk which is now about seven feet high. Is it OK to prune this back as we would like to keep it fairly small? If so when should this be done?

Vertrees, Japanese Maples has tips on pruning them. Nurseries featuring Japanese maples may have a copy on hand, otherwise perhaps a bookstore or library, such as those at UBC Botanical Garden.

It's not nice to fool Mother Nature

Why don't you get a dwarf Japanese Maple and if nesesary move the 'Osakazuki' to a location where it can grow to it's normal size. You could get a bush to replace it.

A lot will depend on what ultimate shape you want for your
tree. If you want a 5-6' tall compact tree then yes, it is okay
to prune your Osakazuki to fit your needs or size restriction
    desires.

The best time to prune is when sap is already flowing in the
Spring. When the first flush of growth is starting to slow
down then prune your tree. That is when I prune mine.
