Re: Acer palmatum Aureum "Full sun" in Mendocino isn't quite the same as it is in Charlotte, NC. Anyone know how much sun it can take in the Southeast?
Re: Acer palmatum Aureum Mendocino "Full Sun" means summer days in the 80's to sometimes low 90's. We are located 4 miles from the ocean and our climate is much different from the coast. A. p. Aureum seems to hold up better than others in the same color range such as Full moon, Orange Dream and Katsura (although Katsura is pretty tough too).
This is the challenging part of growing A. palmatum 'Aureum': how much sun in one's location to have the nice yellows and avoid sunburn? I have placed mine in a big pot exploring its beahaviour. Currently it sees 6 hrs of (spring) sun and it's ok. I'll see in the summer. Gomero
I just put one in the ground this week. I didn't think I was going to love this cultivar, but when I saw it in person it just glowed. I really like the color of the bark - green with blue and yellow tones. I'm a little nervous that it won't get enough sun in its location to give me the full expression for as long as possible. But it's just so pretty I couldn't resist giving it a try. To those of you already growing it, any feedback on where the line dividing great color and sunburn is located in relation to hours of sun?
To those of you already growing it, how many hours of sun to get the best color and at how few does it green out in the summer? Photo from today.
This is a very nice tree. I find it very similar to Orange Dream with its growth pattern and color. If i could only have one of them, I would take the Orange Dream because it seems to have more vivid colors with all of the seasons.
Here is the aureum in 2012. I find the tree very similar to Katsura/Orange Dream when it first leafs out but in a short time the leaves change color to a bright yellow green. When this occurs there is a big difference (with a close look) between the trees. I prefer the more vivid orange color of the Orange dream but I find Ap Aureum to have the best branch structure of the katsura type trees. They all are some of the most outstanding spring color trees and i wish I had room for them all in the garden. the last photo shows an Ap Aureum and Ap Orange Dream.
