Many of you, while browsing Yano's book, have certainly come across the picture in page 133 of Acer crataegifolium 'Hakkan shikin' and have wondered: is it real?, well it is. This cultivar was introduced by Y.Tanaka in 2001 and is distributed by Tsukasa Maples. The plant shown in the pictures is in a pot in morning sun. Some leaves are almost entirely white while others have green splotches. New leaves have some pink as well. Twigs are bright red. Pics 1 to 3 were taken early May and the last one today, the variegation seems stable. For such a strongly variegated plant I am surprised by its vigor; no die back at all in its first spring in my garden. However I have to be cautious since in his book Yano says that hmmm... I do not know quite what to expect...., another 'Akane'? Gomero
Gomero, wonderful variegation with the great contrsat of those pink/red petioles. thanks for sharing this gem with us. Amazing indeed such whiteness can keep the plant going. Mike
Alex, As I said in my introduction above, to my knowledge this maple is only distributed by Tsukasa Maples of Japan. Mine comes from this source. When do you plan to visit Japan? ;o)) Ciao Gomero
