Alex, as you probably know A. x conspicuum is a cross of A. davidii and A. pensylvanicum. Phoenix was a seedling of Silver Vein. So, it could be grafted on to any of section Macrantha, or on to conspicuum rootstock even. I planted a high graft of Phoenix this year, so far doing well. The stock has smooth brown bark with no signs of striping; I have no idea what it is. Yours probably comes from the same source? What does your root stock look like? Good luck with it, -E
