    It is a deep chocolate brown/purple leafing out, followed by large leaves. These are seedlings I have germinated, at several years of age, but I also have the cultivar 'Rogow' from Poland, meant to be hardier: leafing out next to Acer wuyuanense, the so-called chocolate maple, the spring color is practically indistinguishable.
