Under my porch, and next to a pond, there is a shaded place in the ground where I liked to plant a japanese maple. I am not very expert with maples and I don't know which cultivar would be the most right to chose. The tree/shrub should'nt become too width, neither too told (no more than 3 meters). I thought about an Acer palmatum 'crimson queen', but I don't know if it can grow higher than 3 m. I wonder if you would recomend me some japanese maple cultivars. Thanks in advance. Borja
Thanks! I think I'd prefer someone with warm color during the summer and a reddis fall color if possible.
Well I'm a beginner myself so take with a grain of salt, but this year am excited about getting a seiryu. Look at the color variations in the gallery thread! http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=2141 For more inspiration check out this thread. Good luck. http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=10371&highlight=favorite
Thank you for the links! It helped me to find some candidates, though it is really dificult with so many varieties. I think I'll chose between Inaba shidare, Seiryu, Red dragon, Fireglow, sherwood flame and Trompenburg. A dificult election. Do you think all this cultivars will retain the leaf colors despite the summer heat? It will only have 2-3 sun-hours max, and the place is in the countryside where the nights usually cool down.
I have a red dragon variety (inherited from previous owners). I love it, it keeps its dark red foliage all summer and into fall. Not too big as of yet, but I have no idea at the age. At max it would be 7 years old, and it is about 3 feet high and wide. Very weepy.
That depends on growing conditions and local weather. Madrid's is not optimum for Japanese maples and, there, for ultimate height I would take, at best, 60-70% of quoted heights for the Vancouver area. Gomero
I think Gomero is right. Madrid has not the best climate conditions to grow japanese maples, so I don't think it will grow all the big it shall do. Anyway, if in the future the tree becomes too big it would be pruned.
