24 April 2019 Tomato Trellis Posted on April 24, 2019 by Durgan 24 April 2019 Tomato Trellis24 April 2019 Tomato Trellis An overhead trellis was made for 21 tomato plants. The trellis is made from fence posts and rebar and are tied together with plastic ties. The vines are supported by strings tied to the overhead trellis. The plants are allowed to free grow and supported when required. The bed is 8 feet wide and 24 feet long. Each plant has space of about 4 plus square feet. Production is from 300 to 500 pounds depending a great deal upon the weather.
Chainlink fence is also pretty good, too. These two former 6 ft x 4 ft driveway gates are stood on end between two permanent posts, tied together and to the posts with electrical zip ties. There are three beds with anti-rabbit fences and permanent posts that the fence sections are rotated among each year. Anything that climbs does well, especially tomatoes and cukes that can be just poked through, back-and-forth as it grows up.
Not so. Why too small? I have never had a tomato vine too thick to stick through the fence. Just stick a tip through one side then back though the other way. Peas, cukes & tomatoes work perfectly.
