    Book for Maples: wild maples of Japan maple cultivars

    This was recommended as an important book. Another forum member wrote a short review: Maples Reference Books
    This book is out of print, seems to only be available in 2nd-hand book stores. If you speak Japanese, this is one store that would notify you when they have a copy: 日本の古本屋 / About “Nihon no Furuhon-ya”. Another possibility: Currently the DVDs are not sold at World Maple Park either online or offline, but you can order a copy on this site by Nakano House Art Museum (or Nakano-tei Museum of Art) in Niigata Prefecture.

    Gardeners Guide to Growing Maples, The
    By Harris, James GS, David & Charles, 2003
    Good overview of the genus, as well as growing advice that is very pertinent to northern European and North-Western US climates. Nicely illustrated.

    Mr. Harris is owner of the well known Mallet Court nursery and has made several important species introductions.

    Japanese Maples: The Complete Guide to Selection and Cultivation, 4th edition Recommended
    By Vertrees, J.D. and Gregory, Peter; published by Timber Press, Portland, OR, 2010; 404 pages.
    This book was recommended as one of the most complete guides to Japanese maples, in an article by By Brian Minter in the Vancouver Sun on November 4, 2017 (page C2). Cited here is the fourth edition with 600 plants, offering detailed descriptions of over 150 new introductions, updates to plant nomenclature, and new insights into established favorites. There is also a 224 page Pocket Guide version published in 2007 as a complement to the 3rd edition.

    Maples for Gardens Recommended

    This is the photographic companion volume to "Maples of the World", a representative survey of maple species and cultivars compiled in encyclopedia form. With photographs from over 30 arboretums, gardens and nurseries, it is certainly one of the most useful practical guides for the gardener, providing both zone and size information.

    World Checklist of Maple Cultivar Names
    By Gregory, Peter and Hugh Angus, Published by Westonbirt Arboretum, 2008.
    Lists more than 3,800 maples, most of which are Acer palmatum, but many other intriguing entries.
    Alison Vry, Database & Records Officer at Westonbirt, has confirmed in an email:
    "The World Checklist of Maple Cultivar names is no longer available. A new version is being produced but it will be published by the Maple Society rather than Westonbirt, and realistically it may be some time before it is complete."
