In The Garden: Lawn weed in UK

    A friend of mine in the middle of England UK has the grass in the photograph invading his domestic garden lawn. He especially mentions the long root in the photo.
    Any I D would be helpful.

    It looks like Elymus repens.....commonly known as couch grass.
    A blinking pest because of the invasive roots.

    Leaves are sitting too close to each other, and they do not have specific folding in the points where ligula should be...
    I would check whether stems at the base are round or triangular, it might be a sedge.

    Looks more Cyperus esculentus or Carex pendula than Elymus repens to me.
