    I think this is Sechium edule, Chayote.

    Same ID as Wendy. Mine are smoother skinned, but I'd guess that's just the variety. It needs a long summer season, so I'm surprised to see it so fruitful in Strathcona.

    I remember photographing some several years ago, so they must do ok, at least some years. Strathcona is one of our warmer neighbourhoods. The city's website at Gardening says we're climate zone 7/8. That surprises me, but if anywhere here is zone 8, Strathcona would be. Low elevation, lots are generally small, protected from wind, not many high rises blocking the sun.
