Surprisingly for England, we are in danger of having a white christmas. I am almost sure the thaw will come just in time to prevent full seasonal weather based enjoyment, but here's hoping.

Here is a picture of a witches' broom decorated for the season by mother nature:

If you have any maple pictures that reflect the winter season please post. I am sure that the amounts of snow recorded here are pathetic by the standards of parts of North America and Sweden etc. but please show us what you have to deal with.

Wishing you all a very happy christmas (or whatever consumer oriented seasonal festivity your religion deems appropriate).

Beautiful photo, maf! Reminds me of a Japanese woodblock print. Would make a lovely Christmas card. (Or, as you say, holiday/Kwanzaa/Passover/etc.)

Not too much snow here in central Ohio as yet: we're supposed to get an inch of rain tomorrow. However, my parents, who live on the north shore of Long Island, NY, received a foot of snow last weekend.

Best wishes to you for a maple-y New Year!

Thank you friends, and a happy new year to you too.

This year 'Red Filigree Lace' refused to shed all its leaves in autumn; happily it made a good platform for the snow to land on:

Our snowfall last Saturday close to 24 inches. This is pic is from today. Trees are netted because of house sparrows.

Here are some spectacular snowy shots

We already have couple storms in New England so far this year; here are couple photos of my mature Crimson Queen cover by wet snow.
    Happy Holidays everyone!

Hey, 01876: What is the object visible in the foreground of your photos 1, 2 and 5? Looks like a millstone.
Esp. like your photo 1, with the big tree and the little tree.

The forum is not very active lately....

Maf can you still see the top of your maples? ;o)))

We also had our modest share of the harsh winter weather affecting Western Europe and I will not show yet another Sango kaku in a few inches of snow. Instead, as I explained in another thread, some of the maples (unusually) kept their dried leaves and some, like for the 'Sherwood Flame' in the picture, curled up forming a hollow ball. We had some powdery drifting snow on Saturday and that snow piled up in the hollows resulting in something very attractive, like some kind of winter fruit or a maple-cotton hybrid ;o))

They would make good decorations for a christmas tree!

Only about 1cm of snow here now - it seems everywhere to the south, north, east and west had much more - I can see some of the roots as well as the tops ;-))

Temperatures still Baltic, at least I know my seeds outside will be properly cold stratified.

Umm...this article, while fascinating, describes a snowfall of Dec.19 of last year.
How much did you get, say, yesterday?

Thanks Poetry, I saw the reports of "Snowmageddon" on the news and hoped someone from eastern U.S. would post some JM pics.
Just in case the Metric Police are watching, that is 635mm and 710mm in non-Amish units ;-)

Not exactly related but here is Rittenhouse Sq Park in Center City Philly yesterday. The park is primarily planted with Platanus x acerifolia. These were taken about Noon yesterday.

    Re: Seasonal Japanese maple pictures

Like PTB we got lots of snow at the NJ shore. We had around 18 inches (about 1/2 meter) of snow combbined with 40 MPH winds by the coast. This resulted in snow drifts of about three feet or 1 meter. I have included pictures of a A.p. 'Kiyohime' that is a high graft on about a 24 inch standard shown with and without snow, and another two pictures of part of my back yard.

Many of my small plants are compleetly covered and I will have to wait to see if there is any damage.

What a lovely back yard you have, NJ! Beautiful in every season. Nice color and height variations.

I especially like the snow-covered 'Kiyohime'. Ha! It looks to me like a friendly alien being from an arctic planet, a critter created by Hayao Miyazaki..expect it to waddle across the yard! Gave me a smile.

Got 9.5" here, more north of Col's. My parents (north shore of Long Island) report 'not a flake'!

    Thanks for the photos.

Looks beautiful Ed, although I'm sure shoveling the stuff off your driveway may cause you to think otherwise!

We had a lot of damage here last winter when the snow began to melt and the weather turned to rain and snow. The weight caused a lot of broken limbs, up to 12.5 cm { 5"} thick, that may have been avoided if I had knocked the snow off of more trees. Nice photos.

I have been knocking snow off my arborvitaes, some branches nearly touching the ground. Did not do this the last time we had a big snow and the bushes bear the scars of my inaction!

Just heard on the 11 pm news that ANOTHER storm is coming through here Tues/Wed, and will drop another 4-8"...and freezing rain, too. So, NJ...be forewarned and forearmed. Good luck!
