I've had this tree for about two years now, I don't know what species it is but would like to find out so I can propely care for it, I don't know if I should be trimming it to encourage new growth, or leave it alone?? Can anyone tell me what type of palm this is? Thanks Bart
Only cut off dead fronds, a nice neat clean cut close to the trunk but done cut the trunk. I would say it needs full sun and possibly repotting, contrary to popular belief palms do have a vast root system.
Yup, Mexican Fan Palm, if you bought it from a 'usual' source (wal-mart, Home Depot, Lowe's, etc.) I've seen them in grocery stores here... If you bought it from a specialty nursery, it could well be anything, but most likely still W. Robusta. Good luck!
It looks like a Washingtonia filibusta (hybrid of W. filifera and W. robusta), because there are quite a lot of threads, but those threads are not curly enough to be a true W. filifera.
http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=69608 take a look at the above thread - you will be able to id your palm.
That thread is not a good identificator, yet no one yet has made a truly detailed, photographed, professional page to identify W. robusta from W. filifera and even from W. filibusta. I'm growing all three from seed and i will create such a page some time in the future.
I bet most people have no idea still. Could you please post very detailed photos comparing the two with your own clear markings?
Posts continued to move away from helping original poster with their identification, so a new thread was created here: Is this Washingtonia filifera?
