I have read so many sources and there seems to be a lot of conflicting info so before I mess up I would love input from maple pros. :) please

I just impulse bought a Coral Bark 'Sango Kaku' and it has made me realize I may be able to improve on my original placement for the other 2.

I come to with a question regarding what may be wrong with a few of my maples this spring. I had several of them begin to leaf out then suddenly every leaf just wilted and drooped, and now it appears these trees may be dead. Each one is in a pot. A quick search on the internet suggested verticillium wilt as a likely culprit but I am unsure. Wet feet shouldn't have been an issue with these trees either. Is there any...

However, I believe we just had our last frost freeze for the year and old man winter is on it's way out

I have a JM - single leader, no real branching. It did flush out from top to bottom with Buds and then they all fizzled out . I left it alone...bark test showed it was alive.

The lower 2/3 has some buds on it. Above that, no buds but it doesn't appear to have died back yet...


What do I do this season. Leave it alone or top it off...

These are grafted trees and I wonder what they use as rootstock in order to ensure survival in zone 4.

I happened to pass by some at a garden center yesterday that have sprung growth from below the graft union and I took a couple photos. I wonder if anyone can tell me what it is - palmatum?...

1. I think this tree is one Ron B identified as Acer saccharinum, Silver Maple. I'm including this for comparison with what comes next. Note the deeply lobed leaves. There are some coloured leaves on the ground, but the tree is essentially still green.

I had kept all my 'rare' cultivars at work the previous 2 years, as we have lots of cold frames and a high-walled garden so plenty of space and options for moving things around into ideal sun/shade etc and protecting over winter. For Bloodgood over Fireglow:

- Tolerant of full sunlight
- Slimmer but taller profile

For Fireglow over Bloodgood:

- Stunning in sunlight and less dull without sunlight
- Better autumn colours
- Wider and shorter profile
- Smaller more dainty leaves

I think I lean towards Fireglow although specimens I have seen in nurseries have always had more crispy leaves and that's even under a canopy! That makes me think that they are...

Our TMSBI (The Maple Society of Britain and Ireland) youtube channel has a new video: a lovely 10 minute tour of Winkworth arboretum. This is in preparation for our upcoming visit on the 18th Oct 2025. We're also visiting Ramster Gardens and making a return visit to Miles Japanese Maples, to see the new site have a silent auction -- I always come away with some great stuff! -- and tea and cakes. Not to mention a dinner on Saturday and Sunday lunch!...
