Autumn - "Fall" for those across the pond ;°) is near. Here, we had an early spring, then heavy rain, then hot dry weather, sometimes windy, followed by heavy rain again. Most of my potted maples suffered more or less from this weather. 'Sango kaku' and a kind of dissectum atropurpureum in full sun (Zelkova sinense on the right): Left to right, 'Hana matoi', a 'Phoenix' cutting, and a 'Summer gold' mainly in the shade : Acer circinatum that I put in full sun before going on holidays, Acer trifolium, and Acer griseum. They all need a much bigger pot, I'll see to it next spring (or in October): Late-afternoon sun : Acer Shirasawanum 'Aureum' looking not so good, 'Tsuma gaki' doing better than I expected, 'Emerald Lace' that has never disappointed me, and on the right 'Orange Dream', very common-looking at this time of the season : 'Trompenburg' (Full sun) : 'Koto hime' (semi-shade) :
wow the hana matoi is in great status! Mine has lost all their leaves in the hot days (although placed in full shade place)
One of the strange things about this year is that with all the rain, and then warm Aug and early Sept, there's a huge amount of late growth. Not everywhere, but a lot. Since it was down to nearly 5C this morning, most may not make it through the winter, but it's pretty now. I went around yesterday afternoon and snapped some pics. More demonstrative than artistic, heh. The final, unlabeled photo starts with long growth on A. palmatum (lower left corner), at about 4 m up. Then you can see the enthusiastic growth on A. catalpifolium, and more to the right, A. longipes v. weixiense.
It's wonderful to see how healthy your trees look while so many of mine have been gasping for water. (It's raining now though. :) Better late than never.)
A few pics taken a couple of days ago : Tsuma-gaki not so bad thais year + a few bad leaves of shirasawanum 'Aureum' on the left, and on the right very fine 'Emerald Lace', and 'Orange Dream' that could be worse. Some Heucheras to add colour too. Non-"palm...oenums" : Nota bene : - The circinatum "Burgundy Jewel" was deep green in the shade, it only displayed burgundy tones after I put it in almost full sun before going on holiday. It also got leaf-burns because my son didn't come to water it every day -which I can understand... - The cappadocicum was the oly one that got its leaves by either a leaf-cutter bee or a caterpillar of some sort.
Few more - the Attaryi in the last photo is spotless this year..it’s gone a bit crispy in previous years..likes it’s new spot under a canopy of ivy. echoing what’s been said above, late new growth on Orido Nishiki looks lovely in the penultimate photo but surely won’t harden off in time
I gathered the seeds on 'Trompenburg'. Very few on other maples this year : a few from 'Ryusen' (or 'Ryusei')
