We had both a cherry tree and an apple tree start on their own, I am guessing from the compost we used. The apple tree had lots of blossoms on this spring, but the cherry tree didn't. Someone told us that 'volunteer' cherry trees sometimes don't produce any fruit. Is this true? How can we tell without waiting years? It is already 7 feet tall.

It will produce fruit, but the fruit may be sour and/or somewhat bitter. Cherries usually need to be a bit older than apples before they start flowering.

Tree does not look like an orchard cherry in the views provided, if it is instead one of the wild native species from a different part of the genus (or not even a cherry tree at all) the fruits may never be palatable.

You might like to post a closer view.
