Can anyone help me identify this mushroom? I've never seen anything like it. I found it on the forest floor, growing on woddy debris, It seemed to have a stalk, but not a definite one. The inside was a very fibrous, woody texture. No spores were visible except perhaps on the outside crevaces.

    Greetings!

I've seen the start of Phaeolus schweinitzii, Schweinitz' Butt Rot look like this: Could it be growing from a root: Is it near a tree or tree stump?
