I have a large hazelnut tree growing in our backyard, and it has quite a few brown leaves here and there throughout the tree this summer. It also has black spots on the trunk similar to pictures I have seen online. At first I thought it was from the lack of rain but now I think it may have eastern filbert blight. Is there anything I can do to save this tree besides spraying?

The farmers have been taking their nut orchards down because of the blight.
The Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre (Agassiz), 604-796-2221, may be able to advise and suggest a replacement nut tree if you like.

Blight resistant cultivars developed by Oregon State University are on the market here.
