Re: Killarney Beautiful Accolades were found among plums blossom everywhere in this neighbourhood, and one new cultivar to us as I put Mikuruma-gaeshi on it, but we are not sure, welcome your input. Thank you. Mayling & Willy 1. Accolades: Mar 29, 2008 Location: Nanaimo st. between E48 Ave and E49 Ave, 4 of them Status:90% blooming and starts to fall 2. Somei-yoshino Location: E41st Ave, between Nanaimo and Gladstone St. Status: Start blooming, one pic is not clear but the one for the open flower 3. Pendula Location: # 2165 Harrison Dr. small one but well grow Location: #2780 E54 Ave
Re: Killarney The 'Mikuruma-gaeshi' is rare and special: Flowers single or semi-double, 5-7(10) petals, pink and rather early in spring, in short-stemmed clusters. Young growth bronzy-green. The name means "the royal carriage returns" (so the riders could see whether this beautiful tree's flowers were single or not!). Seattle has but one, 21 1/2' x 2' 9 1/2" at Green Lake in a bed of 8 kinds of cherry trees west of the Bathhouse Theatre --A.L. Jacobson, Trees of Seattle - Second Edition
Re: Killarney Mikuruma Gaeshi? Mayling, Gerald Straley's Book Trees of Vancouver lists a few locations with the "Mikurama-gaeshi" cultivar which you might want to check out for comparison. They are in Queen Elizabeth Park (3) SE corner of Cambie @ 29th. A row on 41st between Granville & Oak (alternating with plums) and on 18th Ave from Arbutus to Mackenzie St. You might also compare with the photos of "Somei-yoshino" we posted on the UBC neighbourhood blog on Friday. The tree shape and flowers are similar to yours and they also had a few bud clusters directly from the trunk.
Re: Accolade - Victoria Fraserview, Nanaimo, E 48th-49th Mayling Chang and Willy Su have posted these in the Killarney Neighbourhood blog (really should be Victoria-Fraserview), not realizing that since they were not at the location on the favourites list, they were none-the-less the actual favourites. Or at least we assume there was a confusion with the location and it's not that the ones on E 48th have all disappeared. These are worth a visit now.
Re: Killarney Dear fellows, please don't miss the full blossom of Accolades on the Nanaimo st. as of the date: 2008/04/02
According to Dr. Joseph Lin's input, I moved some of our postings from Killarney to Victoria-Fraserview where they are. Akebonos: [edited by wcutler 2012jan12: we're calling these sargentii hybrids] Location: Gladstone Street between E48 & 49Ave Status: Two of them, 70% blooming but start to fall Date: Mar 30, 2008, 14:00PM Pendula: Whenever I saw this cultivar, I noticed it is planted in private residence Location: #7986 Elliott Street close to SE Marine Dr. Status: One is well grown, one is poor (Too close?)
Have found Akebono and Somei-Yoshinos starting to bloom in many locations. Enjoy! Mayling & Willy Time: Apr 2nd, 2008, 10:00AM Location: E45th Ave between Nanaimo and Berkeley St. - 5 trees Status: Blooming less than 5%, but flowers were seen along the water tube Location: E41st Ave between Nanaimo and Gladstone St. - 9 Somei-yoshino trees Status: Blooming less than 30% Location: Waverley St. between Elliott and Clarendon St. - 5 trees Status: Blooming less than 5% Location: Elliott St. near to E49th Ave. - 1 tree Status: Blooming less than 40% -- no pic. Location: E54th Ave between Vivian and Wales St. - 3 trees Status: Blooming less than 5%, see the light passed through the petals!
Rancho just started to bloom on East 43 Ave. from Stirling to Gladstone Street. You can compare them with the similar Spire.
Unless there is documentation showing they are all that particular cultivar these r-e-a-l-l-y shouldn't be recorded as 'Rancho'. 'Columnaris' has also been distributed in North America and it is not clear how these two may be told apart. In addition unnamed columnar seedlings of Sargent cherry have been sold simply as Sargent cherry.
These are updated photos following a week from the Apr 2nd's postings. Most the ID are corrected because of notable extra staminodes. Mayling & Willy Reported time: April 9, 2008 1. Akebono Location: E45th Ave between Nanaimo and Berkeley St. Status: One is 90% and the rest 4 are 50% 2. Akebono Location: Nanaimo St. between E47 & E48 Ave Status: 50% blooming of two 3. Somei-Yoshino Location: At #6420 Gladstone St. Status: Full blossom and begin to fall, the leaves notable in bronze yellow [edited by wcutler 20090722: Douglas Justice agrees with me that the tree shape is wrong for Somei-Yoshino - branches are too upright, without any horizontal lines. Blossoms are not Akebono but also don't seem right for Pandora. A new mystery tree. I'd be interested to see the bronze yellow leaves next year, and a photo of some older blossoms.] [edited again by wcutler 2012jan12: we're calling them sargentii hybrids] 4. Somei-Yoshino Location: E41st Ave between Nanaimo and Gladstone St. Status: 80% for all nine trees 5. Akebono Location: Waverley St. between Elliott and Clarendon St. - 5 trees Status: Blooming 50% 6. Akebono Location: E54th Ave between Vivian and Wales St. Status: Blooming 80% for one and 50% for other three Thank you to Dr. Joseph Lin, he is right! We are lucky and able to find incomplete petals, so many pics. were taken for staminode.
Mayling & Willy, Thanks for your dedication and efforts. Your records are excellent and usefull. We will have more cherry sightings for our data dase this year. As you can see, most of the Somei-yoshino bloom and wilt earlier than Akebono. Share some photos with you I took 1 week ago at E41st Ave between Nanaimo and Gladstone St.
Re: Somei-yoshino - Victoria-Fraserview, E 41st from Gladstone to Nanaimo These Somei-yoshino are a bright spot on 41st Avenue on the south side between Gladstone and Nanaimo. They're at peak bloom now.

Re: Victoria-Fraserview - FIRST POSTING IN 2009 First posting in 2009 Two Accolades in bloom, northwest side of Nanaimo and E. 48th Ave. March 22, 2009. Notched petals, with colour stronger at top edges.
This is from April 4, so a week later on Nanaimo at 48th. I'm posting them now (April 4 seems like ages ago) because scout Janet is wondering why last year's April 6 posting in what seemed like the same location was of Akebonos. Maybe there's more street information here. Last year's posting really is of Akebonos, and this year's really is of Accolades, and Janet thinks the location is the same, but something must be different. I think these and Anne's are 48th-49th, and it does look like Akebonos on one side at least in the 47th-48th block.
Somei-yoshino - Victoria-Fraserview, E 41st from Gladstone to Nanaimo These Prunus x yedoensis 'Somei-yoshino' are in bloom now. Photos are coming soon.
Re: Sunset The Somei Yoshinos on the southside of E. 41 and Stirling (between Nanaimo and Gladstone) are in full bloom on April 13, 2009.
I turned north on Victoria from Marine Drive today, and was pleasantly surprised by a HUGE planting of Kanzans from Marine Drive almost all the way to 49th, where I turned west, only to find another planting of the same! They are just beginning to bloom, so they should be spectacular very soon.
On April 28, Avium Plenas on Bruce St. between 49th &45th were started to bloom. They must be full bloom now. But some trees were not healthy looking. Some didn't have many buds. Some might have witch's bloom just starting.
On April 30. There are very long rows of Kanzan both side on Argyle St. between 49 to 39(?) [edited by wcutler: Mariko corrected this to between 47 and 37]. Actually I didn't cross 41st Street, but I could see at least 1 block of Kanzans. (See the third picture. It was taken just a bit south of 41st and looking north.)
Kanzan - Victoria-Fraserview, Argyle from E. 37th to 47th Ave I was surprised to find only a scattering of fallen petals, considering the heavy rain and wind the previous night. Still, these trees lining both sides of ten blocks are past their best on May 7th.
