    How are you doing?

I went to the US for the first time in my life. Didn't see many maples except Norway maples, I didn't take pictures iof them, we have plenty here. But two or three species cuaght my attention in colorado, Wyoming, etC.

    Denver : Acer tataricum :

In Cheyenne (lots of plastic boots in the streets, apparently they prefer boots to bisons) a kind of Acer negundo. Not sure if it's the species or a cultivar :

An acer that I think is a variety of A. saccharinum. I saw several of them, first in Torrington, then back to Denver. Yellow leaves and white trunk : A. leucoderma ?

.. and friendly people there. Of course, we were tourists spending money, but on the whole, we met very nice people.

Next trip : Gujarat where we will spend 2026 new year.
Don't know if I live long enough to visit British Columbia, but I'd love to...

Hi Alain, glad you enjoyed your trip. We're in Jackson Hole currently, and have been to Cheyenne previously. Wyoming is a beautiful state, although Cheyenne is too cold for many Acer palmatum cultivars to grow (outdoors, anyway).

You were just down the road from me! I'm in Douglas Wyoming (1.5 hours north of Cheyenne). I could have shown you around to some maples if you made it this far north. If you ever come back get in touch.

I'd say Acer × freemanii (A. saccharinum × A. rubrum). The bark pattern looks like multiple repeated drought cracks covered over by subsequent wound occlusion.

Probably more 'too dry' / 'too exposed', than 'too cold'. I'd think perfectly growable there if you can find a sheltered, moist microclimate. But that's probably a big 'if'.

Hey, I don't think so. Leaves are wrong, and tough climate. This looks more like one of the x freemanii cvs, or maybe a red maple. -E
