The forecast is at last a bit warmer today 20°c, so it was a nice coffee amongst my trees this morning that are definatly transitioning to Summer now. I start my Summer thinning in a few days, so here are a few more before they get their haircut. Skeeters broom.........................................Oshu shidare............................Red dragon Amber Ghost.............................................Bi hoo.............................................Mirte Kinran.......................................................Vic pink...........................................Beni Shigitatsu Sawa
Here's my one this morning, it gets sun for most of the day and the wind unfortunately, but seems to be holding up well, it was planted there last year. Edit It looks far more yellow/gold to the eye than in the picture.
Sitting in my garden having my first coffee at the start of what looks like a lovely weekend, I thought why not shirasawanum Saturday.... So here are a few of mine plus a couple of japonicums. Tsuma Gaki is looking quite pretty now. Jerre Schwartz is beginning to look a little happier and healthier with a little extra shade, and I suspect it's starting to get some spring root growth into the fresh soil mix I up-potted it into. I may well end up keeping it and nestling it in somewhere as it's got such a nice compact, tidy habit. Last one is a Firefly I bought as one of my very first maples years ago and planted by my pond. The winter of the Beast from the East dessicated the whole canopy and I dug it up, trunk chopped it to a stump and left it to see what would happen. It sprouted and grew pretty well the following spring, and it's just sat in this pot ever since, got a bit mauled in the house move but it's trucking on! Love the weird roots on it. The trunk is a mess of die back.
Acer griseum is putting on some extreme growth this year, think almost a foot on some shoots already!
Good morning everyone, I thought a two by two red thread today. Tree and leaf in my garden. Nigrum x 2 Garnet x 2 Lionheart x2 Black lace x 2 Trompenburg x2 Musashino x2 Mon Papa x2
I thought todays title from me should be 'Transition'. The Spring colours are now going to Summer here in Southern England. Perhaps a new thread in the next few days entitled 'Summer Maples 2022' ? Satsuki beni..........................................Atropurpureum..............................Trompenburg Fujinami nishiki.................................Tamukeyama...................................Red Pygmy Yasemin.................................................English Town...............................Red Feather English Lace.........................................English Town Have a good week everyone.
Finally finished the "mother of all downloads" so can post a few pics! Indeed, we are nearing the end of the spring pictures here, I have a few more following this post. Then I think you're right to move to a summer thread! Here's a group, starting 19 May. A couple of non-maple pics: the Kolwitzia is really an Acer buddy, and now that Cooper is gone, Sam gets to come to Paris instead of staying to take care of him.
As today is the last day of May, I thought it apt to make this my last posting of photos to this thread. It has been a very colourful Spring. Anne Irene...........................Oridono nishiki..............................Shaina Beni maiko..............................................Geisha.............................................Metamorphosa Jordan..............................................Carnival......................................Red Wine Red Wine......................................Peve Multicolour........................ Orange Dream
That Peve multicolour is amazing, not one I know much about. What sort of sunlight is it getting? It's almost ghost like. I've not taken much interest in Metamorphosa before now either, but that picture is lovely. Hints of yellow to it... Again, sunlight? This forum is a true catalogue for collectors to peruse haha! Think it'll be the death of my bank account.
Thanks for the nice comments @Cattwooduk. Re both of these, they do not like much sun at all. They will fry if you don't protect them. So not hardy in a harsh Summer full sun. Re bank account suffering due to the maples seen on this forum. I totally agree, but there are far worse things to spend money on than beautiful trees......lol
Iijima Sunago just caught my eye so thought I'd share, I'm really looking forward to when this gets bigger.
That's a great color! Thanks! I like it a lot. It's one of a pair, this one upright, the other a dwarf. I planted them both finally. This one is a seed from 'Versicolor' which germinated in 2011, planted in 2015. It doesn't suffer from tip dieback, as some of them do, and has a nice open form. Here's a few more, late spring but some of the late starters just coming out now, here A. turkestanicum and A. cappadocicum ssp giraldii. Anyway, scenes from around, and a few maples in focus. A. calcaratum is an evergreen maple, which is growing outside at Wespelaar, so I hope to do the same here. A rare maple from Thailand, this one was sourced from Mallett Court just before Brexit implementation. The shirasawanum in the pictures has been sick with verticillium for about 20 years, and next spring will probably lose most of it's height. It has bushy growth at the base, but 3m up the leaves are now very small. It goes through the cycle every few years, but is still hanging on!
I think they're probably the same. 'Cosmos' came first, the people who introduced (it as) 'Radiant', and trademarked that name, claimed it was a sport on 'Cosmos'. It's all a bit unfortunate, frankly. That's how I remember it, anyway. Here's some more. The amplum ssp catalpifolium is a new addition, which I picked up as it seemed rather different (and is ungrafted, too) from the large one we have in the ground. That one has much wider leaves, and no discolored underside (you can see it's a bit purple) which makes me wonder if one of these is not ssp. bodinieri. The aff. obtusifolium is from a friend who grew the seedling in Italy: it's a very attractive, large-leafed plant, in some ways like obtusifolium but in some ways different. I'm not sure who the other parent might be, maybe opalus or monspessulanum? Both Summergold and Auratum did not succeed in the ground and are now recuperating in pots.
I think this one should go on the Synonyms or same or similar to thread. Might save someone buying both. Edit 1, added to #665 on the list.
Here are a just few more. All the Usugumos are looking quite blotchy this year. This is our oldest Usugumo, and also the slowest growing; the other two are already larger, though it seems healthy enough. This one was planted in 2006! The first picture has an interesting sport on Hoshi yadori, we'll see if it's stable.
Inspired by @emery 's photo of Kolkwitzia amabilis above here is one of it with shira Aureum. Still in the early stages of flowering here in Northamptonshire. Not 100% sure if this is the cultivar Pink Cloud but I want to say it is... the bumblebee likes it either way!
@emery amazing photos, what a collection!!!! This is a funny old hobby/collecting interest..antique collectors and art collectors buy amazing artefacts that are hugely desirable and interesting I think..and I respect that...but collecting things that just get better and better and turn into something magical (with some care along the way) and the distinct potential to outlive us all seems something rather more special!
