First posting 2010 Autumnalis Rosea in bloom January 27, 2010, northeast corner of Grandview Highway and Renfrew, right in front of the McDonald's. Looks good for an Autumnalis R., in its own little patch with spring bulbs at its feet.
There are some more of these right on the west side of Boundary, just south of Grandview Highway, on the Wendy's grounds. What's with the cherry-fast food connection in Renfrew-Collingwood?

Two great 'Akebono' locations in this neighbourhood are looking perfect now. This one is on Clarendon north of Kingsway, trees mostly just on the east side of Clarendon, but very colourful as you pass by on Kingsway. On Wellington, from Picton to Manor is a whole block of 'Akebono' on the south side, and then the next block, Manor to Reid, they form a great canopy from both sides of the street. All the Wellington trees are fully in bloom. But, there are three young trees on Wellington, just west of Manor, north side. The centre one is also in full bloom, but the two outer ones have almost no flowers open. However, the few that are open look like 'Akebono' to me. Surely they're not. There's no such thing as an 'Akebono' not in bloom now. I hope to get back there when they're more in bloom, but it's not exactly on my way to anywhere.
It's transplanting shock. If sufficiently damaged full recovery may never occur. Down here large balled-in-burlap tree stock is often allowed to dry out between the production field and the final resting place. This is a great way to stunt subsequent top growth, including the growth of flowers. Otherwise, if handled successfully these will resume normal top growth after the roots grow back out the first fall after planting.
Two more nice sites here. Five or six 'Somei-yoshino' in this lovely allée at the Windermere Secondary School on Lillooet at 27th. And these big old 'Akebono' on Austrey at McHardy. The circumference of this one is roughly 160 inches.
Re: Renfrew-Collingwood 'Rancho' round-up We're not allowed to use cellphones in cars (unless hands-free), but they forgot to ban the use of cameras. These 'Rancho' run on both sides (almost) of Kingsway for one block west and east from Rupert. I actually went around the block to park and take the second and third pictures above. A little farther along, south of Kingsway, so really in the Killarney neighbourhood, is this line of 'Rancho' on the west side of Wessex from School (who ever heard of these streets!) to Kingsway.

With a little time to kill before heading off to Delta, I was trying to see if I could get lost and find some cherries. These four 'Shirotae' on the street and south side of Cunningham Elementary on Nanaimo at 37th were a nice find, and they smelled very nice too.

The Autumnalis in front of Mcdonald's at NE corner of Grandview Highway and Renfrew was starting just starting its bloom on February 20, 2011, almost a month later than last year (January 27, 2010, Post #27). It was such a windy day, none of the other photos turned out, and we never made it back to get more shots.

The lone Whitcomb on Nanaimo and N.Grandview is showing off its open blossoms. Although not as purple-pink as I expect of a Whitcomb, close-up of the 5-petal flowers shows extremely exquisite details.
The festival favourite in Melbourne Park, just east of Joyce Skytrain Station, is a bit past its prime, but offers some unexpected treats, starting from the south end, there is a beautiful Shirotae in full bloom: The Shirotae is at the end of an arc of Akebonos, which are the festival favourite: At the other end of the arc are another two Shirotaes: And a Tai Haku: And here's another view of this beautiful park:
Ten mature Ukons are finishing their bloom along the south side of E. 15th Avenue, between Renfrew and Nootka on May 5, 2011.
I hadn't realized till I got there that some trees I saw from the Skytrain were the ones Joseph just posted, but since I was on the ground anyway, I went to have a look at something pink on the north side of the Joyce-Collingwood Station. Here's a nice little allée with seven young 'Whitcomb' off Ascot at McGeer, actually belonging to a building called Regent Court.
On March 30, 2009, jamor noted five older 'Whitcomb' on Manor Street between Queens and Wellington Avenues, only 25% in bloom (at the end of March!), so she didn't post any photos. That's about three blocks from Clive Ave where I was yesterday, but I didn't realize it, so back on the train to Cherry Heaven*, since I wanted a photo for our map. I counted four 'Whitcomb' on Manor. Here they are, about halfway open. I think 'Whitcomb' colouring is best at this stage. On the way back to Clive, I talked to a guy working on his car on Spencer around the corner from Clive. He says these trees on his street are last to bloom, double-pink (so 'Kanzan'). He prefers the 'Akebono' a block away on Austrey, which he realized were the same as the ones at Burrard Station. * I'm calling it Cherry Heaven because of the block of 'Whitcomb on Manor, and another on Clive, the two blocks of 'Akebono' on Austrey and the block on Wellington and the 20 'Akebono' at Melbourne Park, and the block of 'Kanzan' on Spencer. There are also a lot more cherries around Regent Court, 'Akebono' I think, but maybe something else, in addition to the row of 'Whitcomb'.
