I think this must be Picea alcoquiana, Alcock's spruce, outside the parking lot fence. The tops of the leaves are green, but you'd never know it from my photos, as I was only able to look up at the branches. It strikes me funny looking at the unruly tree in the photo, because I was very taken with the loveliness of the brances and thought it was such a beautiful tree.

It's a fir Abies, one of the high-altitude Sino-himalayan species in the A. spectabilis - A. forrestii group.

Thanks, Michael. Abies that are supposed to be in that area include A. delavayi, A. fabri, A. holophylla, A. homolepis, and A. squamata. One of those?

It keys out as Abies forrestii, doesn't really fit any of the ones you cite.

PS homolepis (only one 's' ;-)
