Shogetsu @ the temple grounds of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. There are at least 16 trees ... used to be 18, I believe. The main cluster are on the north end, three of the east and a few more on the west side of the grounds. Three new young trees, were planted on the north west side, not sure which cultivar.... The gates are usually open early and I've been there till 10pm at night to enjoy a walk.
Thanks, Josie. It's amazing to see so many 'Shogetsu' in one place, and many of them (not all) looking quite good. I wish the church would value these treasures enough to keep after the rootstock growth when it starts to develop. Now it's more expensive to remove the rootstock limbs or just wait until the trees need to be removed. And I'm guessing that the two missing trees became sweet cherries before they were removed, but maybe not.
Not sure what killed the 2 trees but I don't remember too much rootstock growth on them. I think the really dry summers are really hardon the trees. I need to talk to someone ... maybe I can even learn to prune them.
Many of our cherries do ok with the dry summers once they're established. But 'Shogetsu' do not generally do well here - that's what is so extraordinary about this group of trees, with many of them looking so good. Here is an article about removing the suckers when they're small. I don't know the source, don't know if it's a good article. Maybe someone can say if anything is misleading or if there is a better article. How to remove fruit tree suckers...the right way – Grow Great Fruit
