I want to plant cypress trees in my yard in South Surrey but have been told not to because there is a virus and they cannot grow well here. Is that true and what would be a good alternative?
Now I'm confused Ron, I thought they were Cupresus sempervirens? I'm thinking of them as the columnar dark green trees that you see in Van Gogh Paintings & in parks, cemetries & formal garden in the Mediterranean areas of France & Italy.
They're different; Ron is suggesting them as alternatives if you can't grow Mediterranean Cypress. Whether it is true or not about the virus, I'm not sure - I've not heard of any virus affecting it. A bigger problem might be winter kill in any very severe winters, depending on exactly where you are.
the limit for cultivation of the Italian cupressus is usda zone 8 (is possible usda7 if you live near one lake)another limit is the snow because the snow crack the branch.i suggest the cultivar Pyramidalis(if is present in local nursery)remove the cone because curved the branch ...the type specie in Italy is under attack of deuteromicete melanconiale Seridium cardinale (Wag) Sutton (sin: Coryneum cardinale)this fungus have origin in Nord America, for this i suggest one cultivar graft that have good resistence :)
