Out of seven plants one survived the 2008/2009 Winter and is now producing fruit. They are starting to open slightly so are ready to harvest.

    Hi Durgan,
We used to plant Globe artichokes as well and we did manage to get most of them through the winter. We found that it was easier for us just to plant new ones each year. We got better sized globes and healthier plant. They are not hard to grow from seed. They can be planted out fairly early as they go better in the spring with some cooler weather. I know down in California where they grow them that they actually do divisions from the base were you see on an older plant where it has produced offsets. They take a knife them off and replant.

Agree. That was my initial experience. The over-wintered ones do poorly in my garden. They are much later and slower growing than using seedlings. I grow mostly for the novelty. Artichokes don't do much for me. Some people rave about them, but I suggest the preparation and condiments used is the attraction.
